PASIR Gudang City Council (MBPG) introduced two new initiatives to promote cleanliness and improve emergency preparedness in the municipality.

Mayor Datuk Mustaffa Kamal Shamsudin said these efforts demonstrated MBPG’s dedication to creating a cleaner, safer and better-prepared community.

“In collaboration with SK Tanjung Langsat and local community representatives, MBPG’s Environmental Health and Licensing Department organised a gotong-royong under the Johor Bersih 2.0 campaign,” he said.

The event, held at the school in Masai, saw participation from 40 individuals, including SK Tanjung Langsat staff and local residents.

“This initiative aims to foster responsibility and awareness about maintaining a clean environment while preventing pests and insects, particularly Aedes mosquitoes which can spread dengue fever,” he said during the MBPG full council meeting at Menara Aqabah.

The second initiative was the X-Sera 2024 Drill Exercise – Site Emergency Response Action –conducted through the Pasir Gudang Emergency Mutual Aid (Pagema) programme.

The drill took place on the grounds of Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd in Pasir Gudang.

The launch of the programme was attended by the mayor, Shell Malaysia facility manager Faridah Darwis, NGC Energy Sdn Bhd Health, Safety, and Environment chief William Ong Hung Boon, MBPG secretary Nurul Ashikin A. Jabar and deputy secretary Abdul Malek Mohamed.

Key stakeholders involved included Johor Port Bhd, Lotte Chemical Titan (M) Sdn Bhd, Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering (MMHE) and Vance Bioenergy Sdn Bhd.

The programme also saw participation from government agencies such as the Pasir Gudang Fire and Rescue Department, Seri Alam Police, Johor Baru District Health Office, Sultan Ismail Hospital, Sultanah Aminah Hospital and the Department of Environment.

Mustaffa Kamal, who is also Pagema adviser, highlighted the importance of such drills in strengthening the capabilities of Pagema members to handle emergencies and provide timely responses.

“We encourage all industry players in Pasir Gudang to join Pagema to ensure we are always ready to face any emergencies,” he said.

Separately, MBPG chief whip Datuk Mohd Amin Ahmad announced that the city council had been appointed to a task force under the Greater Johor Baru initiative.

“The task force, which includes Johor Baru City Council, Iskandar Puteri City Council and Kulai Municipal Council, aims to address flash floods in Johor Baru.

“The main issue is the clogged drainage system. We must resolve this to eliminate flooding.

“Cleanup contractors have also been deployed across the region to ensure trees are trimmed and debris removed, to prevent blockages in drains,” he said.
