PETALING Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon led his city council workforce in reciting the corruption-free pledge at its Integrity Day and Anti-Corruption Day ceremony.
Some 500 Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) employees gathered at the event themed “Strong Integrity, Strong Nation” (Teguh Integriti, Kukuh Pertiwi).
Mohamad Zahri also signed a corruption-free pledge on behalf of the city council during the event at the MBPJ banquet hall in Menara MBPJ on Jalan Yong Shook Lin, Petaling Jaya in Selangor.
The recitation and signing were witnessed by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Selangor director Datuk Alias Salim.
In his speech, Mohamad Zahri said the pledge was recited not only in response to the call to combat corruption, but it also served as a reminder for civil servants to carry out their duties with full integrity.
The event is organised yearly by MBPJ as part of its efforts to curb and eliminate corruption, fraud, abuse of power as well as nepotism and cronyism.
“The event also saw the official launch of MBPJ’s Anti-Corruption Policy Book, which is aimed at strengthening public service reform,” its Corporate Communications Unit said in a media statement.
“This initiative was taken to enhance the efficiency of civil servants and build trust in the government.
“The policy book symbolises MBPJ’s efforts to ensure the implementation of strong governance and integrity elements in its administration.
“It also reflects MBPJ’s full commitment to the National Anti-Corruption Strategy and the Organisational Anti-Corruption Plan, as well as fulfilling requirements for the ISO 37001:2016 Anti-Bribery Management System certification by Sirim QAS International.”
In line with efforts towards the digitalisation of council services, MBPJ has developed and unveiled its Integrity Management and Complaints System.
“This system was designed to ensure public complaints related to misconduct by MBPJ staff are managed more efficiently while guaranteeing the confidentiality of whistleblowers,” said the statement.
“Through this platform, the officers involved can record, manage and take follow-up action on integrity complaints more quickly and effectively.”
The event also saw the introduction of MBPJ Integrity Icon Award 2024.
Ainul Farhiah Abdul Wahab, a librarian and MBPJ’s Knowledge Resources Division senior assistant director, won the inaugural award and received a cash prize of RM1,000.
The award was based on criteria such as having no records of misconduct throughout the 2023-2024 evaluation period, active participation in integrity strengthening programmes, and significant contributions to the city council.
The event ended with a forum held to broaden participants’ understanding of the importance of integrity in the public sector.
