TREATMENT for vulnerable newborns at Hospital Pakar Sultanah Fatimah (SFSH) in Muar, Johor, is boosted by a donation of RM46,200 worth of medical equipment.
The donation from OCBC Bank (M) Bhd through its Muar branch, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Muar, aims to address the rising cases of neonatal health issues and urgent need to replace the hospital’s outdated medical equipment.
The hospital reported an increase in newborns suffering from jaundice, respiratory distress and abnormal heart rhythms in recent years.
The condition of existing treatment machines, which had deteriorated over time, raised significant concerns among medical staff.
SFSH paediatric department chief Dr Ngian Geok Hoon expressed gratitude for the assistance, saying: “We are pleased to have these new machines to help newborns suffering from jaundice, respiratory distress and abnormal heart rhythm problems.”
The donation includes a neopuff resuscitator, a phototherapy lamp and a defibrillator.
The neopuff resuscitator provides positive pressure ventilation for neonates, particularly those experiencing respiratory distress at birth.
The phototherapy lamp, also known as a biliblue light, uses blue light to treat jaundice in newborns.
The defibrillator delivers an electric shock to the heart to restore a normal heartbeat.
“These will go a long way in assisting our newborns,” Dr Ngian added.
OCBC Bank Muar branch senior manager Sia Pueh Win said the bank would continue its commitment to supporting communities in which it operated.
“Newborns are our future, and we are very glad to have been part of this meaningful initiative to ensure the hospital has the right equipment to treat newborns as well as possible as they enter the world.
“We would like to also thank Rotary Club of Muar for the collaboration,” she said.
Sia said OCBC Bank aimed to go beyond providing banking services, by meeting the social needs of the community.
“We hope the impact of the equipment will be felt positively in the long-term by the community in Muar,” she added.
