SHOPPERS at Bandar Baru Bangi wet market in Section 1, Bangi in Selangor, can expect better facilities once upgrading works are completed on Feb 13.

Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) is overseeing the project, which has a budget of RM450mil allocated by Housing and Local Government Ministry.

Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan said he forwarded the local council’s request for funds to Minister Nga Kor Ming last year.

Upgrading works began in November and included replacing the market’s tiles and roof, along with electrical wiring and repainting the exterior.

During a site visit with MPKj representatives and Zone 17 councillor Farhan Haziq, Syahredzan noted that the market featured 26 trading lots selling vegetables, dry goods, and poultry.

The wet market has been operating since the early 1990s and opens daily, except on Monday, from 6am to 1pm.

It also houses a food court.

Vegetable seller Fuziah Kamaruzzaman, who has been operating there for nearly three decades, was thankful for the upgrade.

“We were temporarily relocated to another part of the market.

“We were told we could return to our original stall in a few days,” she said.

Chicken seller Rizal Fahrudin hopes the food court can be upgraded too, noting that the premises is outdated.

Syaredzan said the project at the market was part of larger efforts to upgrade and beautify public amenities in Bangi.

He said Nga had, in July 2023, announced a RM790,000 allocation to undertake various upgrade and maintenance works at Cempaka Lake Park.

Nga, in a press conference during his park visit, said the project would be undertaken by MPKj.

Additionally, Syahredzan has announced that Selangor government would distribute vouchers to low-income households in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration.

Interested individuals should contact their respective assemblymen to obtain the vouchers.

Last December, state human resources and poverty eradication committee chairman V. Papparaidu announced that 23,800 Jom Shopping vouchers worth RM200 each would be distributed for the celebration.
