THE Perak Cultural and Arts Department auditorium was filled with thunderous beats of the thavil, a percussion instrument, as renowned artiste NRS Suthakaran gave his maiden performance in Ipoh, Perak.
Suthakaran and 11 members of his musical troupe from Jaffna, Sri Lanka, performed for about three hours during the “Taal Thavil and Nadaswaram” concert.
The highlight of the concert was the 90-minute thavil exposition, which was complemented by the soulful resonance of the nadaswaram, a wind instrument.
The combination of the instruments created a unique carnatic classical musical experience, which blended powerful melodies and intricate rhythms, for the 344-strong audience.
The concert was aimed at showcasing the cultural and rich musical heritage of Sri Lanka.
Also present was Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, Mohammed Rizvi Ismail.
The concert was jointly presented by the Greentown Indian Cultural Society, Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, Tourism Perak, state Culture and Arts Department and state Cultural Council.
The offices of state executive council members A. Sivanesan and Loh Sze Yee provided instrumental support.
A day before the concert, the performers enjoyed a tour of Ipoh guided by Greentown Indian Cultural Society members.
