THREE restaurants in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, were found to have placed tables, chairs and other equipment illegally on pavements and public parking bays.

The restaurants are located at Jalan SS2/24, Jalan 21/1 and Jalan 20/14.

This was discovered during seven joint operations by Petaling Jay City Council (MBPJ) this year, together with immigration and police.

A total of 77 business premises were inspected, during which 143 foreigners were apprehended, 11 compounds issued and 20 premises closed, while 50 seizures were carried out.

Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon told StarMetro that the operations were mainly in response to complaints about foreigners suspected of operating businesses illegally.

“On Jan 24, I accompanied MBPJ enforcement officers to three restaurants that had been issued numerous compounds.

“The restaurant operators had been invited to MBPJ for a briefing but they failed to show up.”

A VERY LOW BLOW

Collectively, the three restaurants had 89 compounds.

“One of the restaurant’s had not renewed its 2025 business licence.

“It had a temporary licence but had not paid the RM330 licence fee,” he said.

During one operation, cooking equipment was also spotted obstructing pavements, he said.

In an unrelated matter, Mohamad Zahri said there were 1,970 vacant lots at 23 night markets in the city.

“I urge youths and locals who are interested to start a business to visit MBPJ’s Licensing Department to learn more about the available opportunities as we also have programmes to train entrepreneurs.

“We can explain all the procedures, rules and regulations too.

“Our aim is to assist the public to set up legal business and adhere to guidelines, especially on food handling.

“We want businesses to comply with food safety standards.”
