THE Bukit Assek redevelopment project in Sibu, Sarawak has been expanded from 201ha to 335ha.

It will encompass a riverbank and three wetland areas, following approval from Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, says Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng.

He added that the expansion would facilitate comprehensive development.

“The Bukit Assek redevelopment was announced last year, but full details will be disclosed by the authorities in the first quarter of this year.

“Currently, the project is focusing on integrated design and development to meet long-term needs,” he said when hosting a dinner for the media.

Chieng said the redevelopment was part of the state’s initiative to develop Sibu holistically, in line with sustainable development goals.

The project is expected to boost the local economy by creating job opportunities and attracting investments to the area.

Setting sail around the world

He said this demonstrated the state’s commitment to providing top-notch facilities for the people while fostering a more conducive living environment in Sibu.

Chieng hopes that the project can commence soon.

“A special exhibition by the State Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) will be held for three months so residents can obtain a deeper understanding of the project,” he added.

As part of the development plan, Chieng said a new road would be constructed to connect Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce with Jalan Oya via Jalan Bukit Lima Forest Reserve.

This new road was expected to ease traffic congestion in Sibu and improve accessibility for residents, he added.

Additionally, he said the state government planned to introduce affordable housing within the area.

Chieng said discussions with LCDA would take place to determine the type and location of the proposed housing developments.

He also expressed support for a proposed cancer treatment centre and a satellite heart centre in Sibu.

“These centres will greatly benefit residents, especially those who previously had to travel to Kuching for treatment.

“Sibu’s strategic location makes it an ideal choice, not just for Sarawakians but also for people from neighbouring Sabah, Indonesia and Brunei,” he said.

Chieng added that having such facilities in Sibu would reduce travel costs and time for patients needing specialised treatment.

“With these centres in place, specialists can come to Sibu to perform procedures,” he said.
