A TEAM of five youths collected close to RM50,000 during a 900km journey across Peninsular Malaysia to raise funds and awareness of childhood cancer.

Brothers Chong Zen, 17, Chong Zac, 14, and childhood friends Ch’ng Xiang Zhe, 17, Yu Zemin, 18, and Lim Tzi Yuan, 17, are from Penang.

The group’s “Hearts on Wheels” initiative was aimed at benefitting the non-profit Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS).

The Kuching-based society provides care and support for children suffering from childhood cancer and their families.

According to SCCS communications executive Agatha Lee, the team started their journey on Feb 5, cycling over six days from Johor to Perlis.

They raised RM49,661, surpassing their RM30,000 target.

Lee credits Lily Liew, a long-term supporter of SCCS and mother of the two brothers on the “Hearts on Wheels” mission.

Tackling outbreaks head-on

“Liew shaved her head in 2016 for SCCS’ annual GoBald fundraiser, demonstrating her commitment to children battling cancer,” said Lee.

Liew accompanied the group on the cycling journey to offer support and encouragement.

Separately, Lee said SCCS held a heartwarming Chinese New Year celebration, sponsored by Ibraco Bhd, at The Northbank Club in Kuching.

This event brought together childhood cancer patients, survivors and their families.

There were family-centric activities including a children’s fashion show, lucky draw, family photo contest, mini games, dance performances and lion dance.

Over 100 people attended the celebration, including 23 families of patients and survivors, SCCS committee members, medical staff supported by SCCS and Ibraco representatives.
