IWD celebrations to start Feb 27

THE Penang state-level International Women’s Day celebrations will be a month-long affair.

The International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 celebrations, themed “Accelerate Action”, will see events take place from Feb 27 to March 31.

It includes a beach run and various performances alongside the launch on Feb 27 and a fiesta on March 1.

Penang social development, welfare and non-Islamic religious affairs committee chairman Lim Siew Khim said this year’s event marks the 13th edition Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC) is organising.

While IWD is observed on March 8, Lim said it would be celebrated earlier here on Feb 27.

“Activities will carry on throughout March.

“This annual celebration is not just a commemorative event.

“It is also a platform to appreciate women’s achievements in various fields such as social, economic, cultural and political.

“It is a reminder that efforts are still needed to ensure that women have equal opportunities and resources to realise their potential.

Lim said the theme for this year’s celebration is in line with the international theme.

“This theme calls on all parties to accelerate action towards achieving gender equality,” she said during a press conference to announce the celebration.

She added that this year would be a celebration of superheroes to highlight the strength, resilience and courage of women.

PWDC chief executive officer Datuk Ong Bee Leng said the celebrations would be held in Komtar and launched online simultaneously on Feb 27 across Penang’s five districts.

“This year, PWDC is working with various partners, including local councils and private companies, to carry out the event.

“There will be a Purple Fiesta on March 1.

“It is an open event for all men and women to celebrate women in a fun atmosphere.

“The fiesta will take place at Ferringhi Bay, along Jalan Batu Ferringhi, and feature sand sculpture making, games, sports activities and a special Women’s Beach Run.

“The fiesta is specifically designed as a platform to recognise and celebrate the role of women,” said Ong.

She said iconic buildings like Komtar would be illuminated with purple lights starting Feb 27, as a sign of solidarity with women.

The colour purple symbolises justice and dignity.

“We will also have a ‘Raudhah Ilmu’ programme in conjunction with Ramadan, which includes a special forum,” said Ong.
