DESPITE the busy festive period, more than 200 members of the Johor Wanita MCA wing from across the state attended its Chinese New Year gathering.

Held at a restaurant in Jalan Wayang, Kluang, the event was attended by Wanita MCA chief Datuk Wong You Fong, MCA Youth chief Ling Tian Soon and other Johor MCA leaders.

Wong was happy to see many Johor Wanita MCA wing members attending the Chinese New Year event.

“I would like to congratulate Kluang Wanita MCA division for organising such a successful event for our state Wanita members who range from grassroots members to division leaders,” she said.

Wong added that the gathering was also held in conjunction with Wanita MCA’s 50th anniversary.

She added that the party would hold a major anniversary celebration on Aug 25 at its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

“As this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Wanita MCA wing, all our members, from veterans to current ones, have played big roles.

“The gathering also signifies the party’s gratitude to our Johor Wanita members for their hard work during the Mahkota by-election,” she said.

Wong said Johor Wanita MCA members were a big factor in Barisan Nasional winning the by-election on Sept 28 last year.

“This gathering is for them, to show appreciation for their tireless work.

“It is also a morale booster for our Wanita members as there will be more challenges ahead, and it is important for us to keep our momentum going,” she added.

Meanwhile, Ling, who is Johor health and environment committee chairman, also paid tribute to the wing’s unwavering support despite many challenges.

The Yong Peng assemblyman added that, over the years, the party has pushed its Wanita members to become community leaders.

“There are currently 125 MCA members appointed as councillors in 16 local councils in Johor.

“Of the total, 33 are state Wanita members.

“Twenty Johor Wanita MCA members have also been appointed as village chiefs in the state,” he said.

Ling said this showed that MCA recognised its Wanita members as frontliners in helping people and not as supporting cast members.

“The party will continue to empower our Wanita members to become leaders in assisting the community,” he said.
