MOST storm victims in Sekinchan, Selangor, have returned to their homes over the weekend.

Sabak Bernam District Council zone 1 councillor Wong Ah Chia said only about five families are still at the Dewan Seri Sekinchan temporary evacuation centre (PPS).

“Their places are among the most heavily impacted.

“It is still not entirely safe for them to return to their homes,” he said when contacted.

Wong also said he had engaged with several agencies including Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS), Sabak Bernam Social Welfare Department and Sabak Bernam District and Land Office for more allocations to help victims repair their damaged homes.

“It is hoped that the victims can receive help from these agencies as soon as possible so that they can repair their houses before Hari Raya,” he said.

Following the storms on March 6 and 11 in Tanjung Karang and Sekinchan respectively, contributions worth RM155,300 were distributed by the state.

In a statement, Sekinchan assemblyman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said all 48 families affected in his area received cash and daily essentials such as rice, cooking oil, cookies and sugar worth RM30,000, in an allocation from his office.

“A total of RM25,000 in moreh contribution was also distributed to all mosques and surau in the constituency to enliven the Ramadan month,” said Ng, who is also Selangor local government and tourism committee chairman.

He urged his constituents to always be prepared for storms, given the current unpredictable weather.

LZS also donated RM100,300 in cash to 27 families at Masjid Pekan Sekinchan.

The families received cash aid ranging between RM500 and RM5,000 depending on the degree of damage.

Those with damage estimated at about RM1,000 or below received RM500 per family while those with RM1,001 and RM5,000 losses received RM1,000 each.

RM3,000 was provided for each family that suffered losses between RM5,001 and RM10,000, while RM5,000 was offered to those with damage worth RM10,000 or more.
