A NEW two-hour parking limit at selected spots in the city centre will be implemented by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) starting April 7.
In an effort to reduce the incidence of motorists treating public spaces like private driveways, DBKL, in a statement, said the two locations for the pilot project are Medan Tuanku and Jalan Ipoh Kecil.
The implementation will be expanded in stages to other areas starting in June. Once implemented, motorists can no longer hog parking bays in the city.
In an exclusive interview in January, mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif told StarMetro that DBKL would introduce a two-hour parking limit for downtown Kuala Lumpur to curb congestion and touting.
Maimunah said that DBKL’s legal department will be amending the by-law which allowed the same vehicle to be parked (in public parking lots) for extended hours in Zone A, which are areas in the heart of the city like Bukit Bintang and Pudu.
These moves were to ensure fair access to parking while alleviating the city’s traffic woes.
“Tackling these issues has been long overdue and introducing a two-hour parking limit is high on our agenda,” said Maimunah.
She said the initiative required amendments to the Road Transport (Provision of Parking Places) Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Order 2016.
“We need to work closely with the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) to revise the regulations, a process that could take time,” she said, adding that she wanted to implement the changes this year.
“My target is April, although my team suggests June as a more feasible time frame,” she said.
The new parking charges for two-hour parking bays are set according to three zones:
Zone A charges RM1.50 for the first hour and RM2.50 for the next, totalling RM4.00 for two hours;
Zone B has a rate of RM1.50 per hour and RM2.00 for two hours; and
Zone C charges RM0.80 per hour, making it RM1.60 for two hours.
Payments can be made via the EZ KL Smart Park application.
