Taman Kinrara flood wall plan raises other questions

I HOPE Subang Jaya City Council’s (MBSJ) plan to lengthen a flood wall along Jalan TK 2/11, as reported in StarMetro on July 20, “Longer flood wall for Kinrara monsoon drain”, will effectively resolve flooding.

As someone who has been living in the area for the last 30 years, I fear the whole effort is a waste of resources.

The question that has to be asked is: What causes the flood whenever there is a downpour?

Taman Kinrara Section 2 (TK2) was built without any massive development in the vicinity.

The nearby Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas) had yet to be constructed.

The small drain built initially with the culvert and underpass leading to Sungai Klang was solely to cater to this residential area and some preceding housing around the area.

Fast forward to today, with poor planning and rapid development, the volume of water flowing into the drain and an engineering defect of the bend of the drain across Persiaran Kinrara result in water rising quickly in the lower-lying areas of TK2.

Will extending the retention wall solve the issue of flash floods in TK2 effectively?

Did MBSJ take into consideration rainwater flowing out from TK2 into the drain?

Did MBSJ consult with the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) on the best way to mitigate the issue?

This problem did not surface overnight.

The two floods which occurred in December 2022 and March 2023 were the worst I have experienced.

Residents have been consistently raising the problem with successive state assemblymen.

While we are thankful for responses from the representatives and the local authority, I ask that they tackle the problem decisively.
