THE road sweepers in Seremban, Negri Sembilan, are exceptionally dedicated and hardworking.
These workers, equipped with skewer brooms (penyapu lidi) attached to long wooden poles, can be seen sweeping streets early in the morning in various parts of the town.
They are easily visible with their fluorescent orange overalls.
They keep Seremban’s streets clean.
I have seen them working even on Sundays as I drive around Seremban Lake Garden after church service.
They will be sweeping the roads which are often littered with leaves from the huge rainforest trees.
The Seremban Lake Garden is lined with these trees, which shed leaves after a strong wind or shower.
The leaves fall onto the walkway or jogging track and the roads around the lake.
But thanks to the sweepers, the walking path, jogging track and roads are always swept clean.
And it is a pleasure and delight to see the Lake Garden and the roads around the lake clean and tidy.
Kudos must be given to the management of the street cleaning services for their planning and implementation.
Credit must be given to these road sweepers.
We are fortunate that we take cleanliness of our roads seriously.
And because our roads are clean, we take the sweepers for granted.
We do not value or appreciate their services.
Credit must also be given to the grass-cutters who cut grass along road pavements, housing estates and our highways.
A trip to a few foreign countries and the dismal state of their roads will awaken us and have us counting our blessings.
The next time we see these sweepers or grass-cutters on our streets near our homes, we could offer them a packet drink to make their day.
These small acts of kindness will show them that their services are appreciated.
