KUALA LUMPUR: Popular wishes to express its gratitude to the public for their help in spreading the love of reading among school pupils.

Thanks to the people, pupils from each of the selected 24 primary schools in Malaysia received 150 books, giving pupils the opportunity to gain new knowledge through fun and exciting books.

Dubbed the “New Books, New Joy” charity campaign, this corporate social responsibility initiative was held from Dec 1, 2019 to Feb 29, 2020 at all Popular and Harris bookstores in Malaysia. However, due to the Covid-19 restrictions, the books could only be delivered at the end of last year.

During the campaign, customers who purchased selected English, Chinese and Malay children’s reading materials (Primary 1-3 and 4-6) with heart-shaped stickers would receive bookmarks that allowed them to leave encouraging messages for the school pupils.

Additionally, those who contributed five books were eligible to receive Popular vouchers worth RM5.

The knowledge we sow today, blossoms into the flower of tomorrow. In this spirit, Popular Malaysia sows the seeds of today, bringing joy to rural primary school pupils, in the form of new books, to cultivate the love of reading.

“Reading is to the mind, what exercise is to the body.” How aptly these words of the Irish playwright, Sir Richard Steel (1672 – 1729), resound today, especially in a world where information is readily available on smart devices. Let’s work towards this target, to assure them of a brighter tomorrow.
