Police corporal charged with assaulting girlfriend’s two sons

KOTA KINABALU: A policeman was slapped with two charges of hurting his girlfriend’s two sons at the Magistrate’s Court here on Tuesday (July 11).

However, no plea was taken from Hazlisham Othman, a corporal, who was said to have committed the offence at an apartment in Penampang at 7pm on May 1, 2021.

Court registrar Rita Kunsoi sat as magistrate.

On the first charge, the 39-year-old was accused of injuring a man, aged 19, under Section 323 of the Penal Code.

The accused faces a maximum one-year jail term or a fine up to RM2,000, or both, if found guilty.

The accused was also charged, for the second count, of causing grievous hurt to a teenage boy aged 18.

The charge was framed under Section 325 of the Penal Code which provides a jail term that may stretch to seven years, and shall also be liable to fine, on conviction.

The court subsequently fixed July 18 for the plea hearing.

The prosecution, represented by Insp Kelvan Elson Maik, urged the court to fix bail at RM1,000 with two local sureties for each count.

Counsel Dominic Chew who appeared for the accused, however, implored the court to grant a lower bail amount, saying Hazlisham posed no flight risk, besides being still on duty.

He also urged the court to consider only one local surety for both charges as the accused had two children to care for and was the sole breadwinner for his family.

The court then granted RM1,000 bail for each charge with one local surety to the accused, pending case disposal.
