Men wear women's girdles to smuggle RM115,000 in drugs in Tawau

KOTA KINABALU: Two men attempted to sneak out some 1.8kg of syabu by stuffing the drugs into a pair of women’s girdles they had on to evade authorities in the east coast Tawau district.

But their ruse did not hold up when police saw through it before they could leave from the Tawau ferry terminal last Friday (Oct 11).

The suspects, both foreigners aged 39, were arrested by a team from the district Special Branch and auxiliary policemen at 9.45am.

Tawau police chief Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said the suspects were spotted in different locations at the terminal before they were detained.

He said auxiliary policemen saw the first suspect behaving suspiciously as he tried to pass the security checkpoint to board a ferry bound for a neighbouring country.

A check on the suspect found that he had hidden five transparent plastic bags containing suspected syabu weighing 1,541.43gm in a girdle he was wearing,” ACP Jasmin told a press conference on Monday (Oct 14).

“The girdle he wore was also modified with the intention to fool the authorities,” he said.

The police managed to detain the other suspect who was waiting to board the ferry after successfully passing the screening process.

“An inspection on his body found two plastic (containing suspected syabu) in the girdle he was wearing and four more plastic bags in his shoes,” he said, adding the plastic bags contained 269.911gm of syabu.

Police believed the drugs were meant to be smuggled to a neighbouring country.

The suspects had no previous criminal convictions, ACP Jasmin added, but both tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.

“The suspects have been remanded seven days beginning Oct 13 for further probe under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” he said, adding the drugs were estimated to be worth over RM115,000.
