Man held in Labuan over modified 4WD carrying 300 litres of diesel

Ministry officials checking the modified vehicle at a dump site in the Bukit Kalam industrial area of Labuan.

KOTA KINABALU: The driver of a modified four-wheel drive (4WD) has been detained after enforcement officials found a hidden tank on it used to store subsidised diesel.

The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry enforcement team detected the vehicle at a waste disposal site in the Bukit Kalam industrial zone in Labuan.

The vehicle had been modified with a concealed storage tank in the bank.

"Our inspection found that the vehicle had been modified by adding a tank (that contained) approximately 300 litres of diesel fuel," the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday (Jan 7).

The 44-year-old driver of the vehicle, a local man, was also detained and had his statement recorded, it added.

An investigation under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 was opened after the suspect failed to submit an authorisation letter or controlled goods permit for the diesel.

The total value of seizures in the incident came to RM30,645, the statement added.
