Vitreoretinal diseases can be solved with macular hole surgery

FULL thickness Macular hole (FTMH) is a condition where there is an anatomic defect in the continuity of the foveal retina. In this condition, the patient will likely experience distortion of vision and decreased vision, said Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal surgeon Dr Ong Lieh Bin.

He said in a majority of the cases, macular holes are postulated to be caused by idiopathic vitreomacular traction (pulling of the vitreous gel on the macula). In some cases, trauma may be responsible for macular hole formation. It is more common in females and more than 50% of the macular holes occurred in patients from age 60 and above. It can be bilateral in 10% to 20% of patients.
