Let's focus on knowledge, not exams

THE Education Minister’s speech (delivered by the Director-General of Education) at a summit last month, outlined a commitment to change the exam-oriented focus of Malaysian education to a holistic and diversified one. It is a step in the right direction for the future of education in Malaysia.

Academics and the public alike have all criticised the focus on examinations. Yet, dismayed as we were year by year, we continue to acknowledge public exams’ super-achievers and we want our children and students to emulate their success. At the end of the day, it is really about how many As one can score above all else.
