THE best way to find out what your dream college or university can offer is to experience the campus in person. Not only would you get the feel of the place, you can also talk to industry experts who can advise you on the requirements for the course and programme best suited towards you.
For that most academic institutions now hold open days, which are activity-driven and crammed full of information. They are also fun-filled, and you can even get to meet future classmates and sometimes, long-time friends there.
Sunway College and Sunway University’s Open Day is two days packed with talks, tours and meet-and-greet with lecturers including many of the student community, who serve as ambassadors.
Informative talks
On Saturday, Dec 14, a list of talks that will be beneficial to school leavers, starting from noon and all the way to 3pm.
If you are unsure at this stage of what you want to pursue, it’s best you attend some of the talks covering topics on Pathways After SPM/O-Levels that include: “Study in Germany”, “Study Options after SPM/O-Levels”, “Do you want to be rich? How to succeed in the 21st century”, “Sunway Diploma Studies: Future Jobs... Future Skills” and “Sunway University and Lancaster University: Why the Partnership works for Malaysian Students”.
Those who are certain that accountancy is their focus can attend “The Modern Accountant: Career Beyond Numbers” and “Future CEOs – ACCA & ICAEW”; while those who are keen in hospitality in the Sunway Le Cordon Bleu can find out how to “Make Your Dreams Come Through In The World Of Cuisine”.
Biosciences and Nursing students can look forward to topics on “Exciting Careers in Allied Health Industry”, “Rewarding Nursing Career at Sunway” and “Exciting Frontiers in Biosciences: Biomedicine, Biology with Psychology and Medical Biotechnology”.
With the advent of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 being touted as the upcoming industrial age, those interested in Computing can find out more in “Analytics: Powering Your Future” and in “Jobs in Computing: High Demands for Hi-tech Specialists”.
There are also talks in Psychology with “Psychology For A Sustainable Future”, while those who love the idea of becoming “detectives” using statistics and mathematics can find out about “Actuarial Studies: Multiple and Flexible Actuarial Pathways – Meet Sunway’s Actuaries” and “Statistics: Multiple and Flexible Pathways for Aspiring Statisticians”.
For those attracted to business, finance and marketing should attend the talks on “Marketing: Riding the Trend, Enhancing the Future and Unlocking the Potential”, “Victoria University Business Degree: Your Pathway to Victory”, “Business Analytics: The Sexist Job In the 21st Century”, “Growing as an Entrepreneur”, “The Secret Power Of The Generalist”, “Your Career in the Financial Sector and the Role of Financial Sector”, “Bridging the Frontiers: Your Road to Success” and “Achieving Solutions Anywhere, Anytime” on global supply chain management.
Weekend of discovery
In addition, the whole weekend is also an Exploration Weekend, with the different schools in Sunway University opening themselves up to those seeking more of what to expect after enrolling.
Along the spectrum of Creative Arts, each department has individually set up activities, with more talks, showcases and workshops.
On Dec 14, the Music Department will present a talk on “Soundscapes of the Future: Careers in Music and Audio Technology” and a Piano and String Masterclass.
The Film Department will host “Filmmaking for the 21st Century” talk and then there is a workshop on “Editing with DaVinci Resolve”.
The Communication Department will run a workshop on “Art Direction and Campaign Strategy”, while guests to the School of Hospitality can meet and greet the coach of the winning Team Malaysia of the World Pastry Cup 2019.
There is also a talk on “Sustainability in Hospitality”, while the Events Management Department will be asking “Why Event Management” is essential.
Sunway’s American Degree Transfer Programme (ADTP) offers a wide range of degree courses that are flexible and accepted globally.
Those who are interested can find out more in the ADTP Exploration Week with a talk entitled “US Education: Global, Flexible and Affordable”. There are also ADTP workshops on “Programming for non-Programmers” and “The MoJo (Mobile Journalism) Experience”.
On Dec 15, the Music Department is presenting a Piano Quartet and Chamber Music Recital, as the Communication Department hits the panic button with a simulation of a strategic crisis management press conference entitled “Unboxed”.
The Hospitality Department will cook up a storm in its Culinary Demo on “Seafood Sensation” and demonstrate how to present the perfect “Food and Beverage Service”, while the Events Management Department will explain what “Venturing into Event Management” entails.
ADTP students can get the best information on “Engineering – What can you expect?” and on “Money Management” on Sunday.
Visitors to both the Open Days can take part in a Music Audition, open to those who wish to test their skills and talent; as well as the “Paint in 3D Space with Virtual Reality (VR)” talk and an Interior Design Workshop, both hosted by the Department of Art and Design.
Postgraduate offerings
If you already have a degree but are looking to further your academic credentials, drop by Sunway’s Open Day for information concerning postgraduate courses.
Sunway University has a wealth of postgraduate programmes, from Diploma in Primary Care for Elders to Master’s Degrees in Actuarial Science, Business Administration, Computer Science (by research), Creative Arts and Media, Human Resource Management, Information Systems, Life Sciences, Marketing, Psychology, Public Policy, Sustainable Development Management, Visual Communication and Media Studies.
Under Doctor of Philosophy, the programmes are in Biology, Business, Computing, Creative Arts and Media, Mathematical Sciences, Medical Science and Psychology.
You can attend talks and workshops on both days such as the ones in the Business School on master courses for Administration called “Session with MBA Programme Leader”; a preview on Human Resource Management called “Future of Human Resource Management”; a Marketing workshop on “Digital Marketing and Analytics, Part 1 and 2”, followed with a preview.
The School of Arts’s Masters of Arts in Visual Communication and Media Studies will hold a “Virtual Reality (VR) Presentation” demonstration on Dec 14 and a workshop on “Augmented Reality (AR)” on Dec 15.
The Jeffrey Sachs Center of Sustainable Development will conduct a preview session on “Mastering the Climate Change” for its Master in Sustainable Development Management and one on “Why a Master in Public Policy?” during both days.
Emerging new programmes
Next year will see the introduction of several new programmes that are anticipated to fulfil the needs of an IR4.0 society.
These programmes are a Diploma in Interactive New Media, Diploma in Computer Science, Bachelor of Business Analytics (Hons), Bachelor of Arts in Advertising and Branding, Master in Public Policy, Master in Creative Arts and Media, PhD in Creative Arts and Media, PhD in Medical Science and Postgraduate Diploma in Primary Care for Elderly.
Touring a five-star campus
With a legacy of over three decades since the establishment of Sunway College in 1987, the Sunway Education Group has grown over the years as a significant part of Sunway City, it is well equipped with world-class, QS rated five-star facilities.
During the Open Day, you can jump on a tour that will cover Sunway’s academic facilities such as the Sunway Campus Library, science labs, a human performance lab, the Sunway Multimedia Integrated Learning Environment (SMILE) Language Lab, a cuisine kitchen, a Cybersecurity Intelligence Lab, a shooting studio, music practice rooms, multimedia production lab and recording studios and a rooftop theatre.
The campus is fully equipped with sports facilities such as the FIFA-certified turfed football synthetic field, basketball courts and the SunGym. Out-of-state students can live on-campus at the Sun-U Residence, which is equipped with an Olympic-sized swimming pool, or at the Sun-U Apartments or Sunway Monash Residence.
Sunway also provides subsidised bus services to students from various areas within Klang Valley, as well as a free shuttle bus service around Sunway City.
