The advanced industrial robotic and cyber teaching room lab at UCSI University is among the best in the industry.
UCSI University is building over 15 engineering labs powered by Industrial Revolution 4.0 technologies at its sprawling 28,000sqft learning space within the Kuala Lumpur campus.
This comes following a RM28mil investment by the university which would house all engineering labs and 13 programmes (including postgraduate) offered at the university.
The first of the three construction phases is expected to be completed by the end of the month and would occupy four floors in Block C of the campus.
The labs would be equipped with a building management system (BMS) and face recognition, among others, making the facility one of the first of its kind in the country.
Also known as a building automation system, BMS is a computer-based control system installed in buildings to control and monitor mechanical and electrical equipment such as ventilation, lighting, power, fire and security systems.
“We call our facility the IR4.0 lab because it houses industry-leading technologies providing our students a conducive learning environment coupled with hands-on experience with industry-based equipment.
“The advanced chemical and robotic lab are some of the most advanced labs built,” said UCSI Faculty of Engineering, Technology and Built Environment dean Asst Prof Ts Dr Ang Chun Kit.
UCSI University invested over RM28mil to build its engineering research facility that could give students the edge in standing out from the rest.
The research facility, he said, offered building information modelling (BIM), augmented reality and virtual reality technologies.
He foresees that an unpredictable and unprecedented technological change is looming with the advent of IR4.0.
“As such, higher learning institutions must be the core modulation in adapting this change and grow in tandem with the advancement of digital automation technology.
“UCSI, a leading private university, aims to ensure the future workforce is highly-skilled and industry-ready,” he added.
With this research facility, Ang said students will be exposed to hands-on experience.
“The university allocated a substantial amount to build this facility to ensure that our students are equipped with the latest technical and technological know-how in preparation for the exponential rate of change brought by the IR4.0,” he said.
With the advent of IR4.0, up to 28 million jobs could be changed to fit the latest demand in the job market, said UCSI Faculty of Engineering, Technology and Built Environment dean Asst Prof Ts Dr Ang Chun Kit.
Based on studies, Ang explained that IR4.0 would have a big impact on the economy and community.
“As the job market changes, the demand for human capital with the right skillset will become the subject of conundrums for many companies.
“Adequate digital and data literacy will become a subject of interest for many companies in many sectors,” he said, adding that emerging technologies could change some 28 million jobs in the Asean market alone.
The engineering faculty at UCSI offers programmes in chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering (artificial intelligence), electrical and electronics, engineering, mechanical, mechatronics, and petroleum engineering.
Aside from offering state-of-the-art facilities to improve students’ technical experience, the faculty has also established collaborations with some of the top companies to enable a synergy between industry players and the academia.
