Things to know before buying a laptop for your child’s education
THE pandemic saw students’ studies paused, as the education system transitioned to a learn-from-home scenario. This new arrangement led to parents, teachers, and students wondering if their learning would be compromised.
At risk of being dubbed the “lost generation” of learners, children were troubled with not just the global pandemic but also a lack of motivation due to the sudden loss of interaction and peer support that they previously enjoyed while attending school in-person.
To address this, hybrid learning was introduced – a blend of online learning and traditional classroom teaching.
The hybrid learning model offers school-going children and teachers flexibility and choice of modality with learning spaces and allotted time, among others, to reduce the gap in disruption of education.
As students and teachers hash out a timetable, parents are tasked with the job of hardware support – essential for hybrid learning to work—and this means finding the right laptop for their child.
While any laptop would work in a pinch, a good laptop designed for children to enhance their e-learning capabilities is vital for their educational advancement.
This may seem like a daunting process, but with the right know-how on the important features of a laptop for this purpose, choosing one for your child would be a cinch.
Here are some points to help parents with finding the right laptop for their children’s studies:
1. Choose a device with the right software
With hybrid learning, students often utilise a range of Microsoft Office apps for education. Therefore, choosing a device that is pre-loaded with the right software is not only important for education, but also saves time and money.
The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i, which operates on Windows 10 Home, comes pre-installed with Microsoft Office Home and Student 2019, worth RM529*, to provide students with the right educational tools. Users can get a free upgrade to Windows 11 when available (1).
2. Smart learning features
Online learning can be quite challenging as children spend countless hours in front of a screen, attending video classes and completing their homework – this tends to lead to eye strain.
As the children are not physically present, it is difficult for teachers to monitor their students actively, thus a child’s focus may slip, or they may be distracted by other activities at home.
To help children “study smarter, not harder”, IdeaPad Slim 3i has incorporated smart learning features with Lenovo Aware into its device.
Lenovo Aware is a local software with healthcare solutions to help them make better use of the PC.
Via the PC’s built-in camera sensors, Lenovo Aware will be able to assist you and your child while they learn.
For instance, the break reminder feature can be set beforehand and will prompt your child to take a break to rest his eyes.
The distance reminder, on the other hand, will alert your child when he is too close to the screen, which prompts him to lean back away from the screen.
Lenovo Aware’s posture reminder will detect your child’s sitting posture through non-verbal body language, space and eye contact. The device will then alert your child if his sitting posture is incorrect for long periods of time – prompting him to correct his posture.
Meanwhile, the attention function can be used to gauge your child’s level of attention and pull his attention back to the learning materials with a pop-up alert, prompting him to “stay focused to improve efficiency”.
Teachers and parents will be privy to cumulative benchmark reports on the child’s device usage, through the smart learning features.
This gives teachers and parents insights into the child’s online engagement, class productivity, and overall well-being.
This also comes in handy should the child need guidance in areas where there is room for improvement, as well as to keep tabs on progress updates.
Additionally, the device’s audio system comes equipped with a noise cancelling function to block out background noises for better concentration.
Also, the Q-Control feature helps in optimising processor performance by improving efficiency, all while keeping the machine quiet.
3. Size matters
During remote learning, your child might not be able to stay in one place for long periods of time and might want to move his study locations – setting up camp in the living or dining room, for instance.
Weighing just 1.65kg, the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i is light enough to be easily carried around by hand or in a backpack.
Furthermore, the education powerhouse can fit up to 12GB DDR4 RAM memory and a hard disk with storage up to 1TB. This makes it perfect to store videos for revision, as well as worksheets and assignments.
4. After sales service
With hybrid learning, you might have found yourself playing a technical support role when it comes to your child’s devices during learning. With Lenovo Premium Care, you have one less thing to worry about.
Lenovo Premium Care has highly trained technicians who provide real-time solutions and offers access to technical support 24 hours for 365 days.
If you purchase selected Lenovo devices from now till Dec 31, 2021, you will be entitled to an extended Lenovo Premium Care warranty at a promotional price from RM139* onwards.
The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i is now available at Lenovo Exclusive Stores (LES) nationwide and on official stores hosted by Lazada and Shopee at a recommended retail price that begins at RM3,099.
