WHILE achieving academic excellence ultimately boils down to the student, a major contributing factor to such success is the quality of education and relevant support that work in tandem with individual effort.
Having experience in preparing students for the A-Level General Certificate of Education (GCE) qualification over 30 years, Sunway College’s A-Level programme has an excellent delivery system, which is reflected by its students’ consistent academic performance and top results over the years with students being accepted into the top universities worldwide, including University of Cambridge and University of Oxford.
True to its well-deserved reputation and track record of producing top achievers, Sunway College A-Level students have once again made the institution proud, with 62.2% achieving straight A* and As in the recent November examination.
A number of students from this cohort have had their efforts rewarded with offers from University of Cambridge and University of Oxford for the next step in their education journey.
Abigail Eng, who has been accepted to study Natural Science (Biological) at Clare College Cambridge, achieved a score of 5A. She attributes her success to her time at Sunway College.
“Sunway College has greatly contributed to my achievement by providing an environment that is conducive to learning and rewarding of curiosity,” she said.
“The college was very supportive throughout my university application journey. With the help of mock interviews, I was more than equipped to tackle the challenges ahead, which included interviews and admission tests.”
Another top scorer, Ong Jia Qing (4A), will also be continuing her studies in Natural Science (Biological) at Christ’s College Cambridge.
“One thing I am grateful for is the tremendous student support. Being assigned a mentor, it was very reassuring to know someone was always there to answer my queries regarding university applications,” Ong shared.
“My Biology teacher, Ms Nesa Ramani Ganesan nurtured an appreciation towards learning beyond the syllabus – the reason I decided to pursue Natural Science (biological) at Cambridge.”
Nathan Sia Tze Yuan (4A*) is headed for further studies in Engineering (Mechanical) at Selwyn College Cambridge.
“From being indecisive about career pathways, to now rank among the few to receive a Cambridge offer, I owe it all to my lecturers who poured their heart and soul into equipping me with knowledge.’ said Sia.
Other notable achievements include Tan Jia Yue (4A*) and Rohan Kumar (4A*) who are both headed to study Natural Sciences (Physical) at Christ’s College Cambridge and Magdalene College Cambridge respectively.
“I would like to express my gratitude to Sunway College, which awarded me a full scholarship to pursue the A-Level programme,” said Tan.
“My lecturers are passionate about their subjects and are extremely helpful, both during and after classes. I would especially like to thank my mentor, Tan Tong Sheng, for preparing recommendation letters for my university applications.”
In addition, Rohan Kumar also expressed his gratitude on the support he has been given.
“I’m grateful to my Physics teacher and mentor, Ng Chee Beng, who went out of his way to help me through the application process and write recommendation letters for the schools and scholarships I’ve applied to.” he said.
Stephanie Tee (4A) who is headed to Queen’s College Cambridge for her Law studies, shared: “My decision to pursue A-Levels in Sunway College, and the support I received from my family, friends and college lecturers, were definitely instrumental in helping me get an offer to study law in Cambridge.
“I was lucky to have helpful lecturers who were always willing to answer my questions, even if that meant having to help me beyond class hours,” said Tee.
Devaassenan Mahenthiren (3A*) who has secured a placement for Physics at St Edmund Hall, Oxford chose Sunway College for their passionate lecturers.
“I chose Sunway College for the strong passion the lecturers had for their subjects. Coupled with a strong work ethic the environment at Sunway College encouraged, it motivated me to pursue extra studied in Maths and Physics which undoubtedly aided me in my application to the University of Oxford.”
Sunway College A-Level director Ruth Cheah commented: “I believe our outstanding results are possible because of strong team players, which include our dedicated lecturers who are determined to ensure their students succeed, together with our students who reciprocate by doing their best to succeed.”
Sunway A-Level has seen 390 Outstanding Cambridge Learners Awards (OCLA) awarded to its students to date.
The programme employs blended learning whereby teaching and learning take place via a dual-mode approach combining face-to-face instruction and self-directed learning via an e-learning platform, providing more flexibility to the students while continues to deliver quality and effective education.
