UNIVERSITI Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) provides scholarships up to RM3 million per yearwhich covers tuition, registration and miscellaneous fees as well as research funds.
UNITEN is a private university wholly owned by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), which has also passed a project called National Energy Seeding Fund several years ago. Seeding Fund provides research funds worth millions of ringgit to UNITEN every year, allowing students to have sufficient funds to carry out research projects.
Dr Chen Soong Der, deputy dean of College of Graduate Studies (COGS), The Energy University said, "UNITEN actively cultivates students with extensive knowledge and vision while contributing to future energy ecology. Therefore, the research topics set by the scholars must be related to energy."
He also mentioned that the world has entered the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and mediocre and repetitive jobs are easily replaced by machines. Only those with creativity, innovation and improvement will not be eliminated. Students and working adults can strengthen their skills and knowledge by pursuing higher education and making themselves more competitive.
UNITEN alumnus, Dr Yew Weng Kean, strongly recommends UNITEN for individuals wanting to further their studies. There, students can be introduced to many energy and power-related contacts and opportunities, which is also an advantage for them to conduct better academic research or employment prospects.
"Some people mistakenly believe UNITEN is a national university. However, UNITEN fees are subsidised by TNB making tuition fees cheaper than most private universities. The lecturers are highly cooperative, guiding students comprehensively, which enables them to complete their research and dissertation successfully," he said.
Dr Yew received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 2008. He was awarded a scholarship from the National Energy Foundation and pursued a PhD in philosophy in engineering, a full research programme at UNITEN. He is currently working as an assistant professor at a private university, excited to pass on the knowledge and research he has acquired.
From a bachelor's degree to a doctoral course, Dr Yew's nine-year study path at UNITEN was not only colourful but also nurtured him to be an all-around leader. He was the chairman of the Young Engineer Section of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), leading over 50,000 young engineers in the country, and was the first young engineer to serve as a member of the IEM Council. He also served as the secretary-general of the Young Engineers of ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (YEAFEO) from 2018 to 2020, where he was responsible for addressing common issues faced by young engineers in engineering organisations from all ASEAN-member countries.
He represented Malaysia in e-sports competitions many times and received a gold medal in the Philippine SEA Games e-competition "Hearthstone" in 2019. It was also the first gold medal obtained in the East Asian Games e-sports event. UNITEN has good sports and recreational facilities to nurture students' development outside of schoolwork and relieve stress.
Programmes offered by UNITEN are accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and its programmes focus on engineering, information and technology, business administration and accounting, energy economics and other related fields.
In the US News & World Report, UNITEN is ranked 227th in the Best Global Universities 2022 for Engineering and 1st among private universities in Malaysia, and 5th among universities in Malaysia. In the same ranking instrument, UNITEN is ranked 1st in the world for “percentage of highly cited papers among the top 1% most cited in Engineering”. In the AppliedHE Private University Rankings 2022, UNITEN is ranked second in Southeast Asia and first in Malaysia.
