‘Best Paper Award’ for UTAR academics


CaptureCaptureUNIVERSITI Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Centre for Railway Infrastructure and Engineering (CRIE) chairperson Assoc Prof Dr Chua Kein Huat (pic) and his team were presented with the Best Paper Award (Lightning Protection Applications) at the recent 12th Asia-Pacific International Conference on Lightning (APL 2023).

Titled “Common mistakes on lightning protection design and installation”, the paper proposed remedial actions to address these mistakes.

Co-authored by UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) academic Dr Hau Lee Cheun and PhD candidate Hoo Dick Sang; TAKO Astatic Technology Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Albert Kow Kek Hing and manager Steven Chia; and IED Sdn Bhd consultant Lim Kim Ten, the paper stressed the importance of hiring qualified professionals for designing and installing lightning protection systems to ensure proper implementation.

This research was supported by TAKO Astatic Technology and UTAR CRIE as part of the industry-academia collaboration between the two parties, a press release from UTAR read.

The APL, which started in Beijing in 2003, is a biannual lightning conference organised in the Asia-Pacific region. It features keynote sessions, technical paper presentations and technical exhibitions on emerging technologies in the field of lightning discharge and lightning protection.

Held in Langkawi, Kedah, from June 12 to 15, the APL 2023 was organised by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Power and Energy Society (IEEE PES) Malaysia chapter. The conference saw the submission of 135 papers from 18 countries. The papers were reviewed by an international panel.
