Team GG Bond from SMK Tinggi Batu Pahat, Johor, has again been crowned the Taylor’s International Accounting Day Inter-school Competition champion thanks to their sound accounting knowledge and creative prowess in tackling a case study on the country’s tourism industry.

A total of 162 teams from 46 institutions nationwide took part in the second edition of the competition which kicked off in August before culminating in the grand finals at Taylor’s Lakeside Campus on Oct 7.

Team GG Bond leader Tan Sze Yung credited the school’s accounting teacher for her encouragement and invaluable guidance.

Jubilant that SMK Tinggi Batu Pahat managed to retain the title it won last year, he said the competition has equipped him with the experience and skills to tackle business challenges.

“I had the privilege of honing my critical thinking and presentation skills through the case studies given to us during the competition,” he said in a press release.

In the preliminary round, participants were required to complete an online 50 multiple-choice questions within an hour, with the top 20 groups with the highest average score moving on to the semi-finals.

The semi-finalists were tasked with providing solutions to a case study with five teams selected to compete for the the top RM5,000 prize.

Held in celebration of International Accounting Day on Nov 10, the competition was co-organised by Taylor’s College School of Professional Studies and Taylor’s Business School to empower students and to showcase their proficiency in accounting, critical thinking skills, and teamwork while navigating real-world business scenarios.

The challenge was also aimed at fostering an environment of friendly competition and encourage a spirit of continuous learning, collaboration, and professional growth among aspiring accountants.

School of Professional Studies head Jason Lo said there is a pressing need for more accounting professionals in the country.

“According to the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA), there are 38,500 registered accountants as of June this year, and the government’s target is to have 60,000 accountancy professionals by 2030.

“Taylor’s is supporting this goal by organising the inter-school competition and offering scholarships for students to nurture and develop future accounting professionals that are crucial for the economy,” he said.
