Students, families throng Star Education Fair 2023


GEORGE TOWN: It was a family day out for student Wallace Goh who came to the Star Education Fair 2023, held at Setia Spice Convention Centre on Saturday (Dec 9).

The 17-year-old student from Sungai Nibong came along with his parents John Goh,48, Ipy Ing, 48 and his younger sister Melissa, 15.

Goh, who was set to take the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination next month, said he wanted to check his options and to know early what kind of programmes were being offered in the education fair.

"I am more into computer science programmes, so I want to see what other areas that I can look into," he said.

Goh who was a science stream student at SMJK Phor Tay in Sungai Nibong was spotted with his parents John and Ipy checking out courses on offer by UOW Malaysia KDU at one of the 29 exhibitors' booths at Star Education Fair 2023.

Goh's father John said this was the first time he brought his children to the fair although he knew the fair was an annual event.

"I want him to decide for himself, if he likes it, we will try to help him according to our financial ability," said John who worked as an engineer at a factory in Penang.

K. Kirrusha, 19, who also came with her family said she was excited to see what kind of education opportunity for her after she finished her science foundation last October.

"I am looking to develop myself and find more information about computer science programmes," she said.

Kirrusha who came with his family from Sungai Petani, although she had made a decision to enrol in the science computer degree programme at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), she still wanted to explore as much information as she can during the fair.

She described the education fair as an excellent avenue for students like her and a very informative event.

She said everyone at the fair including exhibitors and organisers was very friendly, so it was easier to gather more information on other universities.

Besides UOW Malaysia KDU and TAR UMT among other main exhibitors were Mahsa University, SEGi University & Colleges, City University Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and INTI International University & Colleges.

The fair, which offers various local study options, also draws the participation of international institutions, such as Health Careers International, Australia, Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Polyu), TIAS School for Business and Society from the Netherlands.

Another highlight from the event on Saturday (Dec 9) was the air marshalling demonstration by Aero Malaysian Engineering Centre.

There were also talks by UOW KDU Malaysia presented by the UOW Malaysia KDU Penang Head of Operation Associate Professor Dr Yeap Gik Hong and Head of Department Associate Professor Dr Sim Hock Kheng.

A total of 30 exhibitors participated in the Star Education Fair 2023 at the convention centre.

The Star Education Fair 2023 is held side-by-side with the myStar Job Fair 2023 at the convention centre on Saturday (Dec 9) and Sunday (Dec 10) from 11am to 7pm.
