The Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) and the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST) will continue enhancing the exchange of information, knowledge and expertise between the two countries in the field of science, technology, innovation and economy (STIE).
A supplementary memorandum of understanding (MoU) was inked on Jan 22 by ASM president academician Datuk Dr Tengku Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen and KAST president Prof Ook Joon Yoo to strengthen the collaboration between the two parties.
Tengku Mohd Azzman said the supplementary MoU was aimed at deepening STIE cooperation between the two countries. “ASM is dedicated to fostering meaningful exchanges and pushing the boundaries of knowledge towards scientific excellence,” he said.
Prof Ook said Malaysia is a pivotal partner with a robust growth engine, especially in science and technology.
“With the extended MoU, KAST aspires for it to be a cornerstone for future collaborations, encompassing the exchange of scientific insights and the strengthening of networks among exceptional scientists who contribute to our shared pursuit of academic distinction,” he said in a press release.
Signed on Feb 11, 1999, the initial MoU outlined a collaborative framework between ASM and KAST.
The collaboration focused on promoting scientific and technological cooperation through various means, including bilateral symposia, the exchange of scientists, and the sharing of scientific publications.
Among the noteworthy initiatives was the joint organisation of an international science literacy workshop at Seoul National University by KAST, ASM, and the InterAcademy Partnership in 2013.
To date, ASM has signed 16 MoUs with global science academies such as The Royal Society of Edinburgh, the National Academy of Sciences Belarus and the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Following the MoU, a bilateral symposium was organised with expert networks from both academies sharing their expertise on topics that touched on food and life sciences, medical sciences and engineering.
