Planning your university journey

When it comes to embarking on your higher education studies, the multitude of factors to take into account can be overwhelming, not least the endless choices of universities and courses.

To ensure your higher education journey takes you exactly where you want to be, here are five things to consider.

> Ideal career and passions

You may feel pressured to choose a course that puts you on the right path to the career of your dreams, but don’t dive headfirst into applying for a course you aren’t 100% passionate about.

Take the time to do your research: talk to current students or alumni, engage with university social media pages, and compile lists of course programmes to compare how different universities offer them.

Don’t feel compelled to follow trends or the aspirations of others. Map out a university journey that is uniquely yours.

> Campus culture

Whether you plan on furthering your studies locally or internationally, it is important to determine the kind of campus culture you wish to immerse yourself in.

Universities are a great way to push the boundaries of independence with familiarity, and going abroad can broaden your horizons on a global scale.

Wherever you choose to study, it pays to know the campus culture that not only aligns with your values but also one that pushes you to thrive.

> Campus life

University isn’t all about studying; it’s also about developing yourself as an individual. That is why it is important to research a university’s campus life to see if the extracurriculars offered are activities you would want to participate in.

Also, if you plan on studying abroad, it is good to know what the culture in the country is like and whether it matches up to your expectations.

Look for resources that can offer insights into how to fully immerse yourself outside of your campus and into the culture of the country, with tips on making the most of your time there, and how you can make your life outside of studying enriching.

> Scholarships

University is an investment, and it may feel as if you have to limit your options against high tuition fees. Scholarships are a fantastic way to strike that balance and make studying affordable.

They also don’t have to remain local. Scholarships by government and private sectors alike offer funding for both local and international universities.

> Attend events

Plenty of universities offer events for prospective students to attend. Take advantage of these to get all the necessary information.

Whether it is an open day or a briefing, these events always provide a great platform to help you make a choice and engage with peers who are on a similar journey as yours.
