Zookeepers for the day

Keeperku: UPSIAS volunteers learning about wildlife conservation at Zoo Negara.

THE Keeperku Programme, organised by accounting students at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) recently, saw participants gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting biodiversity and wildlife, as well as learning how to care for animals.

The UPSI Accounting Society (UPSIAS) students were also able to practise their cooperation, communication, networking and organisational skills in a real-world setting by volunteering for the Keeperku Programme in Zoo Negara on June 9.

The goal of the programme was to instil in students a sense of social responsibility, empathy, accountability, and environmental awareness while cultivating a spirit of volunteerism.

Describing it as an eye-opening event, third-year accounting student Lojani Murugiah said volunteering at Zoo Negara made her realise the importance of wildlife conservation and how individuals can contribute to making a difference.

Fellow participant Adriana Syahirah added that the programme was not only about volunteering, but also about learning and growing.

“I am grateful to UPSIAS for organising such a meaningful event for us to participate in,” she said.

The society, in a recent press release, said the success of the Keeperku Programme underscores the significance of incorporating corporate social responsibility elements into student activities.

It gave accounting students a chance to learn vital skills, perform community service and support the preservation of wildlife, UPSIAS said.

“The encouraging comments from the participants highlight the importance of these programmes in developing well-rounded people who are not only intellectually gifted but also socially conscious.

“UPSIAS is excited to host more such events as part of our ongoing effort to empower and inspire students to positively impact society.

“We hope that this initiative will inspire more students to participate in community service and environmental conservation efforts,” the society added.
