THE 19th National Secondary School Chinese Language Society Camp, or Quan Zhong Hua (QZH) 19, which will conclude in March, is calling for participants.

Organised by the Universiti Malaya Chinese Language Society, QZH kicked off at SJK(C) Pai Teik, Nibong Tebal, Penang, last month, drawing some 60 participants from secondary schools in Penang, Perak and Kedah.

The final leg of the camp, which will be held in Selangor, is themed “Together We Narrate and Begin Anew”.

The camp, aimed at gathering students to enhance the quality of Chinese language societies in secondary schools nationwide, includes self-development, organisational management skills, Chinese culture and Chinese language education as its main elements.

Games, workshops, lectures, presentations, sharing sessions, as well as team-building activities are carried out to promote leadership skills.

During the event in Penang, Ng Ding Jian was awarded the “biggest improvement” prize in the male participant category.

The Form Four student from SMJK Krian said he was happy to have made new friends from different states during the camp.

He said activities on Chinese culture and literature helped broaden his horizons and improved his knowledge.

Meanwhile, Form Three student Tan Zhi Yi from SMJK Jit Sin said the greatest reward from attending the camp is her transformation into a more outspoken person.

Zhi Yi, who credited the camp for building her confidence and honing her communication skills, received the “best female camp participant” award.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, who is also Nibong Tebal MP, officiated the event.

Also present was Penang local government, town and country planning committee chairman and Jawi assemblyman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye, who applauded the organiser for promoting Chinese language education.

He also underscored the importance of learning Mandarin as the language is widely used globally.

The camp was held at SJK(C) Pai Teik from Dec 6 to 8 last year, followed by SJK(C) Hwa Jin, Batu Pahat, Johor, from Dec 26 to 28.
