IT was in 2007 that Prof Dr Jin-Yi Yu first considered the possibility that there are two distinct El Niño events taking place in the Pacific.

At that time, the scientist from the Earth System Science Department at the University of California-Irvine had observed that where water temperatures were heating up during El Niño events had been shifting westward since the late 20th century.
