Bracing for floods

Those living in at-risk areas like Kampung Melayu Hilir in Serian, Sarawak, must be extra careful during floods, as there are many unseen dangers when coming into contact with flood waters. — ZULAZHAR SHEBLEE/The Star

AS the final few months of 2021 approach, Malaysia will enter the Northeast Monsoon season, with heavy rainfall and flash floods expected to accompany the period.

In fact, since August, areas like Yan and Kuala Muda in Kedah were already facing severe floods which wreaked havoc, destroyed property, displaced residents, and claimed lives due to the Southwest Monsoon and inter monsoon rainfall. Areas in Melaka, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Sabah and Sarawak have also experienced dangerous rising waters. The Northeast Monsoon, which takes place from November to March 2022, will likely cause more flood incidents, particularly for residents living in low-lying areas and near rivers.
