100 days of Unity Govt: Right on track?

FROM Malaysia Madani to Menu Rahmah, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his unity government are leaving their mark in their first 100 days of office.

Anwar, who was sworn in as the country’s 10th Prime Minister on Nov 24 last year, crossed the milestone yesterday. His Cabinet, who were sworn in on Dec 3, will pass their 100-day mark next week.

While mostly an arbitrary milestone, the 100-day point has become a symbolic but significant benchmark for any new government’s administration style, priorities and speed in implementing campaign promises, as well as the general sentiment of voters.

Hence, in this Special Report: 100 days of Unity Government, five media organisations have collaborated with a research company to gather the voices of the people, especially their readers and viewers; political analysts; economists; non-governmental organisations; and members of parliaments from both sides of the divide on how they feel about the performance of the unity government thus far.

Tagged as Media in Arms, the media collaboration comprises five mainstream media – Chinese newspaper Sin Chew Daily, Malay daily Sinar Harian, local news broadcaster Astro Awani, Tamil newspaper Malaysia Nanban and English language daily The Star – which got together in February last year to share resources and collaborate on diversified news content.

With research firm O2 Research Malaysia, they conducted an online survey that polled 35, 077 people nationwide – comprising mainly Media in Arms’ readers and viewers – from Feb 6 to Feb 16, 2023.

As the survey found, while socioeconomic and quality of life issues still top people’s list of priorities that the unity government urgently needs to address since the 15th General Election, many still feel optimistic about the current outlook for and direction of the country.

Crucially, many are willing to give the unity government the opportunity to fulfil its election promises within five years.
