Proposals to build better dads

BETTER Dads Malaysia, a non-profit organisation that promotes healthy and responsible fatherhood, offers several recommendations to effectively support fathers beset by challenges in meeting familial and professional needs.

> Flexible work policies: Governments can implement and incentivise policies that promote flexible work arrangements, such as telecommuting and flexible hours and parental leave options. These policies enable fathers to better balance their work and family responsibilities, leading to improved well-being and quality of life. This may also lead to a changing of the cultural mindset so that men can take on more responsibilities as a caregiver at home.

> Parental leave policies: This is in addition to paid paternity leave. The current seven days of paternity leave is only applicable for civil servants. Implementing robust parental leave policies that provide adequate time off for fathers to bond with their newborns or newly adopted children is essential. Paid parental leave not only supports fathers in their caregiving roles but also fosters gender equality in parenting responsibilities.

> Fathering and parenting support programmes: Community-based parenting support programmes can provide fathers with resources, education and networking opportunities. These programmes can offer fathering workshops, parenting classes, talks and webinars, support groups, and family coaching initiatives to help fathers develop effective parenting skills, navigate challenges, and build social connections.

> Mental health support services: Governments and communities should prioritise mental health support services tailored to the needs of fathers. Providing access to counselling, therapy, and support groups can help fathers manage stress, anxiety, and depression effectively, promoting overall well-being and resilience.

> Father-inclusive healthcare services: Healthcare services should be designed to be father-inclusive, recognising the unique needs and experiences of fathers. This includes providing support for paternal involvement in prenatal care, childbirth and postpartum health, as well as addressing issues related to men’s health and well-being.
