THE dead black spruce looked like giant, burnt matchsticks standing tall above the grey landscape, stretching as far as Jennifer Baltzer could see.

In Yellowknife, at the edge of one of Canada’s largest scorched forest areas, Baltzer’s focus was closer to the ground – the spruce seedlings were gone.
