THE dodo, a flightless bird about the size of a male turkey, boasted a long, hooked beak and a goofy charm reminiscent of an emperor penguin.

Its ancestors appeared on Earth over 25 million years ago. But by 1662, human actions led to its extinction on Mauritius, a remote island in the Indian Ocean where it had existed.
