ON Sept 18, a 10-year-old Japanese boy was fatally stabbed while on his way to school in China. The date carried a tragic historical echo, marking the anniversary of Japan’s invasion of China in 1931.

The boy died the next morning, and authorities quickly arrested a 44-year-old man who confessed to the attack.
