  • One of the identical twin daughters born to Datuk Mahmood Ambak and Datin MariamAbdullah on Dec 24, 1940. 

  • Of Malay-Japanese parentage, Endon wasone of 11 siblings. Her twin, Noraini, died of breast cancer in January 2003. 

  • Married Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Sept 4, 1965. 

  • The couple has two children (Kamaluddin,38, married to Azrene Abdullah, and Nori, 29,married to Khairy Jamaluddin) and fourgrandchildren (Alya Kamaluddin, nine, and hissiblings, Arif, seven, Amira, five, and Ahmad, four). 

     

    EDUCATION 

  • Anglo-Chinese School (now Sekolah Kebangsaan Methodist), Kampar, and St Mary's Secondary Girls' School, Kuala Lumpur 

     

    CAREER AND POSITION HELD 

  • President of the Association of Wives ofCabinet Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti) 

  • Founder and chairman of Yayasan BudiPenyayang Malaysia (Penyayang) 

  • Patron of various organisations and projects including “Malaysia Batik - Crafted For the World” campaign; Penyayang Pesakit Kanser; National Child Friendly Healthcare Association of Malaysia; Young Women Writers'Association; Girl Guides Malaysia; Association of Wives of Civil Servants and Women Civil Servants (Puspanita) and Friends of Cochlea Implant Users Association. 

  • First chancellor of Open University Malaysia (appointed in December) 

  • Spearheaded welfare projects for overseas causes – the Bosnia Relief Fund, North Korean Children's Fund and Kosovo Welfare Fund  

  • Was in the civil service until she opted for early retirement in 1976 

     

    HIGHLIGHTS 

  • Devoted her time and energy to social,community and charity work, particularly those related to the welfare of children and women 

  • Promoted various projects in the fight against breast cancer and was the inspiration behind the Walk with Pride gala charity dinner 

  • Gave strong support to promotion of arts and crafts, especially the batik industry 

  • Her love for Malaysian heritage is evident in her private collection of traditional costumes, artefacts and decorative household items 

  • The Piala Seri Endon batik design competition held every year in her honour since 2003

  • Tun Fatimah Gold Medal by Her Royal Highness Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Fauziah Tengku Abdul Rashid to honour her contributions to society and community development (Aug 24, 2004) 

  • Received the Tokoh Jarum Belian Malaysia award in recognition of her contribution to the local fashion industry (August 2004)

  • Conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)

  • Darjah Seri Paduka Tuanku Ja'afar Yang Amat Terpuji (SPTJ), which carries the title Datuk Seri 

  • Seri Paduka Mahkota Selangor (SPMS)

  • Ahli Yang Pertama (Seri Paduka) Bagi Darjah Kebesaran Mahkota Kelantan Yang Amat Mulia (SPMK).
