PETALING JAYA: Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng has thanked the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for taking a 10% salary deduction to help alleviate the nation's debts.

“The effort His Majesty has taken to reduce the financial burden of the Federal Government has created enthusiasm among the people,” said Lim in a statement Tuesday (June 12).

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhammad V, on Monday (June 11) decreed that his salary and emolument payments be reduced by 10% until the end of his term in 2021.

The Comptroller of the Royal Household Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz said the King decided on the salary deduction because he was concerned over the national debt and the country’s economic situation.

Wan Ahmad Dahlan said that the King has also ordered Istana Negara not to host its usual Hari Raya open house this year, preferring that the budget allocated for the event instead be channelled to the needy.
