KUALA LUMPUR: Nobody from Umno has come forward to claim the RM116mil cash in 26 denominations seized from properties connected to former premier Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Seri Amar Singh (pic) said the police have to record the statements of representatives from the political party on the matter as Umno needs to prove the validity of its claim.
“However, so far nobody has come forward regarding the cash seized,” he told a press conference at the CCID headquarters here on Wednesday (June 27).
Last month, the Umno communications team said the party was seeking to recover party funds it said were seized by police while it was in the process of being transferred to the party's acting leadership following Najib's resignation as president.
It said the party constitution allowed for its presidents to source and manage party funds, including for general elections.
“This was no different from our former president Najib, who sourced for campaign contributions prior to the 14th general election and was managing our party's funds.
“However, the remainder of these funds were seized by police after Najib stepped down as Umno president and Barisan Nasional chairman, and before they could be transferred to the current acting leadership,” it said in a statement on May 24.
The team said when Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad stepped down as Umno president, he had also handed back RM1.2bil to the party and its three million members.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun had said Umno must go through the proper channels to recover funds seized by police which the party is staking a claim to, as any such claim must be pursued by following proper procedures based on the rule of law.
