SHAH ALAM: Only low income households, known as the B40 group, will receive free water under Selangor's 2019 budget, says Amirudin Shari.

The Mentri Besar said the amount of free water will also be increased from 20 cubic metres to 25 cubic metres to better benefit needy families.

Amirudin said currently, every segment of society received the state government sponsored free water, but the initial intent of the programme was to help elevate the burden of low income households.

"The amount allocated for the free water programme in 2019 is RM80mil and the adjustment enables the state government to save RM105.2mil," said Amirudin during the tabling of the state budget on Friday (Nov 23).

He added the amount will be channelled into the state's development programmes, which currently benefits some 40,000 mothers in Selangor.

The free water programme was initiated in 2008 by former mentri besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, after the then Pakatan Rakyat wrested the state from Barisan Nasional in the 12th general election.
