After being ousted as chief minister by arch-rival Parti Warisan Sabah president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal in the May 2018 election, Musa was not named by Sabah Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin as a candidate.
