MMEA rescues 29-year-old Chinese seaman who had heart attack at sea

MELAKA: A 29-year-old Chinese seaman who suffered a heart attack while his vessel was on the way to the Suez Canal was rescued off the coast of Pulau Undan here by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).

MMEA Melaka/Negri Sembilan director Maritime Captain Iskandar Ishak said his team rescued the crew member of the MV Newcastle Express cargo ship at 3.10am on Monday (Oct 10) about 5.2 nautical miles off the Pulau Undan coast here following a distress call received by the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) at Johor Baru.

He identified the victim as Li Zhongguan, a Chinese national who was among the crew of the vessel sailing from Singapore to the Suez Canal.

Islander said medical care was given by his team as soon as they arrived at the location of the ship.

"The victim was weak and we had to rush him to the Melaka Hospital in an ambulance from a jetty here," he said on Monday (Oct 10).

He added the victim is now in a stable condition.
