JOHOR BARU: Malaysians working in Singapore are hoping for a weekend polling date so they can return to vote in the upcoming 15th General Election (GE15).
Account development executive R. Paveethra, 26, said she lived in Singapore with her sister, and holding the polls on the weekend would make it easier to return to Johor Baru.
“However, if it is on a weekday, I need to first apply for leave. I really hope the Election Commission (EC) would let us know the date soon so that I can make the necessary arrangements,” Paveethra told The Star.
Supply project officer Mohd Lokman Hashim, 29, said there would probably be massive congestion on roads the day before polling with many returning to cast their votes.
He hoped to book a train ticket from Singapore to Johor to avoid the traffic.
“It is easier to travel by train but the only problem is the tickets sell out fast, especially during peak season,” he said.
Drone pilot Lim Ming Hui, 42, who travels to Singapore for work daily, said he would not have any issues with casting his vote.
“I will do my part as a citizen. It will not be a problem for me as I travel daily and I could take my annual leave to cast my vote,” Lim said.
“During the state election, I had to cast my vote through the post.
“This time it will be easier as I can just cross the border to vote,” he added.
The EC will meet on Thursday to discuss the date of the GE15.
In a statement on Oct 11, EC secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak said the meeting would be chaired by EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh and would focus on determining upcoming important dates such as nomination and polling days for GE15, as well as for the Bugaya by-election in Sabah.
