GE15: Perak has more than two million eligible voters, says EC

IPOH: Perak has more than two million eligible voters who can cast their ballots in the 15th General Election (GE15), says the Election Commission (EC).

Perak EC director Mohd Nazri Ismail said as of Oct 20, the total registered voters in the state stood at 2,036,872, with about 526,000 of them being new voters.

Mohd Nazri said among the new voters, 111,800 are those aged between 18 and 20.

"The biggest group are those aged between 30 and 39, totalling at 439,885 or 21%.

"This is followed by those in their 20s, at 404,336 or 19%," he said when met on Tuesday (Oct 25).

"The smallest group are those aged 90 and above, at 10,263 or 0.5%," he added.

He also said that the Malay voters were the most with about one million people (51%), followed by the Chinese at about 690,000 (34%), Indians at about 246,000 (12%), Orang Asli at about 41,000 (2%) and other races.

"We are still updating our database.

"There are still some names that are duplicated, some voters who have passed away but their names are still in our data and some who have lost their citizenship," he said.

Polling day for GE15 will be held on Nov 19, with nomination day on Nov 5 and early voting on Nov 15.

Perak, Perlis and Pahang will hold their state elections concurrently.

Mohd Nazri also said that the Tambun parliamentary constituency has the most registered voters, with about 160,000 eligible voters.

"The Manjoi state constituency, which is under Tambun, has the most number of voters at 86,315.

"It is one of the state seats with the most young voters aged between 18 and 20, with 7.39%," he said.

He added that the federal constituency with the lowest number of registered voters is Padang Rengas, with about 38,000 eligible voters.

"As for the state constituency, Kota Tampan has the smallest number of registered voters at 15,396, though it has increased since 2018," he said.

There are 24 parliamentary and 59 state seats in Perak.

Barisan Nasional had seven parliamentary seats (Umno six, MIC one), Perikatan Nasional has four (Bersatu) and Pakatan has 12 (Amanah two, DAP seven, PKR three).

The Gerik seat is vacant following the death of Umno's Datuk Hasbullah Osman in 2020 and no by-elections were held due to the Covid-19 pandemic and declaration of Emergency.

As for the state seats, Barisan holds 25 seats (Umno), Perikatan has eight (Bersatu five, PAS three), Pakatan with 23 (DAP 15, Amanah five, PKR three), Parti Bangsa Malaysia two and one Independent.
