Young family killed in crash with lorry


MELAKA: A couple and their one-year-old son were killed in an accident at the 216th kilometre of the North-South Expressway.

The victims were identified as Muhammad Nazirul Syafiq Azmi and his wife Zubaidah Abd Rajak, both 28, and their son Muhammad Rizqi Muhammad Nazrul Syafiq.

Alor Gajah OCPD Supt Arshad Abu said the family was travelling from Taman Perbadanan Islam Larkin in Johor Baru, adding that the couple worked as medical staff in different private hospitals in the city.

He said in the incident, the victims’ car, which was northbound, collided with a lorry that was exiting the Ayer Keroh rest and recreational area at about 11am yesterday.

“The victims were killed instantly from head injuries,” he said, adding that the 43-year-old driver of the lorry escaped unhurt.

Melaka Fire and Rescue Department operation officer Muhamad Ezanee Hamat said it received a distress call at 11.02am, adding that 21 personnel rushed to the scene.

All the victims, he said, were found dead at the scene.
