PM: Set aside differences

BERA: The nomination process for GE15 should be peaceful and void of any untoward incident, and parties must ensure their members and supporters do not engage in provocation, says the Prime Minister.

Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that with large crowds expected to flock to nomination centres to support candidates, it was important that discipline be maintained.

“We want the entire election process, including nomination, to be peaceful and harmonious.

“Since there will be many people during nomination, it is important for everyone to be disciplined and avoid provocation,” he said after inspecting the Bera Barisan Nasional machinery preparations yesterday.

The 14-day campaign period for GE15 starts today after the conclusion of the nomination process.

Polling day is on Nov 19, while early voting is on Nov 15.

Ismail Sabri, who is also Umno vice-president, called on Barisan leaders and members, including those from Umno, to set aside differences and issues over candidacy and focus on ensuring victory for the coalition instead.

He said decisions made on candidacy by the leadership were in the interest of Barisan, and it was only right for members to throw their support behind the coalition and ensure a win in the elections.

“Not every name proposed will be able to contest.

“Even though everyone is qualified, only one candidate will be selected.

“What’s important is that the candidate is representing Barisan, and it is our job to support him to ensure victory,” he said.

On whether the decision by those who were dropped or have joined other parties to contest on another ticket would affect Barisan’s chances, Ismail Sabri said: “I hope not. It is understandable to be disappointed when one is dropped.

“But I hope one will think of one’s party. The party is more important than the individual.”

The Bera parliamentary seat is expected to see a three-corner fight between Ismail Sabri (Barisan), Abas Awang (Pakatan Harapan), and Asmawi Harun (Perikatan Nasional).
