KUALA TERENGGANU: Kuala Terengganu Barisan Nasional's Datuk Mohd Zubir Embong was greeted with a pleasant surprise - a gift of pineapple, which symbolises good fortune when he was on a walkout on Monday (Nov 7).
"Ong Lai in Hokkien means I wish you good fortune," explained one of the Barisan’s machinery team to Zubir as he received the pineapple from one of the traders.
Zubir spent about an hour walking around the Kampung Cina, here greeting small traders who were mostly Chinese.
Zubir said he hoped that the people would give him and Barisan a chance to work for them.
"Kuala Terengganu nowadays is quite dull, you can ask the traders, and next year we predicted the economy will be badly affected, so if we don't have a proper strategy (to cushion the effect) we are going to lose.
"We offer tourism (now) but people are not coming, that is just sad," he said.
Zubir, who was a former teacher, also pledged to continue the development programme for Terengganu that Barisan had planned before they fell in the last election.
"Kuala Terengganu is a city that is currently developing, there are many things that Barisan wants to develop but it was stalled following the change of government.
"We are capable of developing the state, we have proved that and I will deliver," he said.
Zubir would face his friend and PAS Kuala Terengganu incumbent Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim, Terengganu Pakatan Harapan chairman Datuk Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad and Mohamad Abu Bakar Muda from Parti Pejuang Tanah Air.
